Youth ecological camp «Amazing Animals Nearby» in Azerbaijan

UNESCO, considering education as one of its priorities, had formulated the basic strategy and the tasks of “Education for All” Programme as a global commitment to provide by 2015 quality basic education, development of the complex methods on younger age child-rearing and educational requirements of youth. Taking into account that 8th of September is celebrated as UNESCO World Literacy Day, National Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan for UNESCO realized some important events.

Considering natural sciences in the context of interdisciplinary interaction with formation and culture, giving particular attention to training in the sphere of ecology and preservation of the environment, as well as studying of a cultural and natural heritage, the National Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan for UNESCO and Social-Ecological Center “EkoSfera” within the joint project conducted Youth ecological camp for young ecologists “Amazing animals nearby” on September 5- 7, 2014. The campus held in the framework of the cooperation in the spheres of science and education between the National Commission and “EkoSfera”, was organized in order to provide children with knowledge in these directions.

The activity of the children's ecological camp with a natural sciences and preservation of the environment bias, was aimed at strengthening of development of the methodology of carrying out of lessons on the nature for young naturalists and devoted to the operating programs of UNESCO in Azerbaijan.

The three-day program for 35 children of the age between 10 and 13 contained a special practical training and supervision over animals, gathering herbarium material, work in groups, creative masterful and scientific site laboratory researches. Experts - leading specialists and ecological trainers of “EkoSfera”, teachers of “Bioecology” Department of “Ecology and Soil Science” Faculty of the Baku State University, research assistants of Institute of Zoology of National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. The camp activity had been conducted under the auspices of SOCAR Ecological Department, SOCAR Eco-Park as well as the Administration of the State Historical-Architectural Preserve “Icherisheher” under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Children have studied the life of snails, bees, frogs, lizards, snakes and bats. These kinds of animals were chosen not casually - for preservation of a biodiversity of a planet all diversity of a specific variety of animals are necessary. The main objectives of the program were to educate children in understanding of the necessity of the abovementioned creatures, their ecological importance in ecosystems, to demonstrate the surprising aspects of vital functions of “biotope neighbors”, to change the attitude towards the “traditionally unloved or considered harmful” to inhabitants of the nature, to reveal new in the usual. The camp activity had been conducted at the territory of Ethno-Ecological Center “EkoSfera” in Qala created by the initiative of Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the "Qala" National Historical-Ethnography Preserve.

On September 21st 2014  the National Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan for UNESCO and Ethno-Ecological Center "EkoSfera" carried out practical field research expedition "The Day of  search for traces of rare animals" for junior and middle-aged students in the Shirvan National Park. Active participants of the camp "Amazing Animals nearby" were awarded with honorary diplomas of the National Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan for UNESCO.
