Comprehensive Sexuality Education: The Challenges and Opportunities of Scaling-Up

This publication is part of an ongoing programme of work initiated by UNESCO in 2008 to provide technical guidance and implementation support for sexuality education programmes, as a platform for HIV prevention, treatment and care.

It emphasizes the challenges and opportunities for scaling up comprehensive sexuality education in school settings. Building on in-depth interviews with key informants involved in past and ongoing work on sexuality education, this publication provides conceptual and practical guidance on definitions and strategies for scaling-up. Though well developed as an area of research and analysis in the health sector, there is a need to translate experience and lessons learned on scaling-up for use in the education sector. Using case studies, the publication also draws on the experience of six country examples (Finland, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Thailand and Uruguay) which scaled up sexuality education through different modalities illustrating good practice and pathways for successful scale-up.

Charting the Course of Education and HIV

This publication examines emerging challenges and opportunities that need to be harnessed to reach the internationally agreed targets related to HIV. It points out how education and health, two basic human rights, are intrinsically linked, as healthy learners learn better, and better educated learners have the skills to be healthy. Education develops the knowledge, values, attitudes and skills required to make informed choices and adopt healthier behaviours.

The authors put forward a new approach for HIV education which requires, inter alia, the reframing of HIV education; rethinking teacher training and support; improving implementation; strengthening the links with school health programmes; adaptation to an evolving epidemic; and meeting the increasing demand by young people and their parents for comprehensive sexuality education.

Measuring the education sector response to HIV and AIDS. Guidelines for the construction and use of core indicators.

This publication aims to provide Ministries of Education and other education stakeholders involved in country responses to HIV and AIDS with clear guidelines on the construction and use of 15 core indicators to measure the education sector response to HIV and AIDS. The guidelines were endorsed by the UNAIDS Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on Education in February 2013 after extensive national, regional and international consultations and a rigorous field test of the new indicators through 2009-2012.

Readers will find detailed information about reasons for using each of the indicators; methods for collecting the data and measuring it; and guidance for interpreting the data, including how to analyse data from various indicators and draw conclusions in terms of potential changes in policies and programmes in the education sector.

Positive Learning: Meeting the needs of young people living with HIV (YPLHIV) in the education sector

Young people living with HIV are experiencing stigma, discrimination and challenges in balancing their health and treatment needs with their education attendance.

GNP+ and UNESCO collaborated to identify and document the needs of learners living with HIV and develop a set of recommendations for action. The recommendations are simple, practical and feasible, and are intended to give guidance to educators, policy- and decision-makers as well as activists and professionals working with young people to enable YPLHIV to realise their personal, social and educational potential.

UNESCO's Strategy for HIV and AIDS

The strategy for HIV and AIDS articulates UNESCO’s contribution to the UNAIDS objectives outlined in the strategy Getting to Zero, and calls for the need to accelerate universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. It acknowledges that the global AIDS epidemic is changing; treatment is helping people live longer and healthier lives with HIV, and now is the time for context-specific, targeted approaches based on evidence and good practice.
