Press Freedom

© UNESCO

A free press is crucial for democracy, development and dialogue, and a precondition for protecting and promoting all other human rights.

In South Sudan, we are facilitating multi-stakeholder dialogue through the Media Sector Working Group and assisting with advice on press laws, freedom of information legislation and freedom of expression on the Internet.

World Press Freedom Day – 3 May

Capacity-building is an important part of our role with the media in South Sudan, and we contribute to strengthening professional standards through a range of training and other opportunities, targeting both journalists and civil society, especially women’s groups. The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) funds our efforts to promote free press through the project: Promoting an Enabling Environment for Freedom of Expression.
