Protecting Our Heritage and Fostering Creativity

© UNESCO Juba
Cultural Diversity Festival in Wau, 2013

South Sudan is a brand-new nation and we are involved in a number of exciting projects that will showcase the contribution of culture to the society. With more than 70 cultural and ethnic groups speaking more than 100 languages and dialects, working with the government to establish a sense of nationhood is key to sustaining peace and social stability.

We are working with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports to develop policies, support key institutions and provide technical and other advice.

A major focus is assisting South Sudan to establish its national archives and its national museum, including designing suitable buildings to house these collections. Our activities with youth media foster peace, while our arts and crafts activities are aimed at creating a viable and sustainable economy for local artists, craftspeople and designers. We also work on world heritage issues.

Projects include:

  • National Archives and Museums
  • Youth media
  • Arts and crafts
  •  World heritage

Fostering an understanding of and pride in South Sudan’s diverse cultures is a vital part of unity and peacebuilding activities as the young country faces the hurdles posed by the latest conflict. A sense of national identity is part and parcel of key projects such as the National Museum and National Archives.
