“The Jury has decided to award the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize to Mr Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, for his actions in pursuit of peace, dialogue, democracy, social justice and equal rights in Latin America, as well as for his valuable contribution to the eradication of poverty and the protection of minority rights in his country."

The Award Ceremony of the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize was held on 7 July 2009, at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

The ceremony was attended by several personalities including:

- Mr Pedro Pires, President of the Republic of Cape Verde ;
- Mr Raimundo Pereira, Interim President of Guinea Bissau ;
- Mr José Socrates, Prime Minister of the Republic of Portugal ;
- Mr Celso Amorim, Minister of External Relations of Brazil ;                              
- Mr Tarso Genro, Minister of Justice of Brazil ;                                                     
- Mr Fernando Haddad, Minister of Education of Brazil ;                                          
- Mr Juca Ferreira, Minister of Culture of Brazil ;                          
- Mr Alassane Dramane Ouattara, former Prime Minister under President Félix Houphouët-Boigny ;
- Mr George N. Anastassopoulos, President of the General Conference of UNESCO ;
- Mr Olabiyi Babalola Joseph Yaï, Chairman of the Executive Board of UNESCO ;
- Mr Mário Soares, Vice-President of the Jury and former President of Portugal ; 
- President Abdou Diouf, Patron of the Prize ;
- President Henri Konan Bédié, Sponsor of the Prize ;          
- Mr Mohammed Bedjaoui, Member of the Jury ;
- Mr Iba Der Thiam, member of the Jury ;
- Mrs Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, member of the Jury ;
- Mr Koichiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO ;
