Experts' Meeting of Latin America and the Caribbean: Literacy and Youth and Adult Education

“Literacy and Sustainable Societies: translating the ‘2030 Vision of Literacy’ into action in Latin American and the Caribbean”

26-27 November 2015. Montevideo, Uruguay

Thirty-six million youth and adults in Latin America and the Caribbean are illiterate. This represents 9% of the total population of the region. Of these people, only 2.5 million are enrolled in literacy programmes, covering 8% of the potential demand: this is clearly insufficient for the needs of the continent. Although a variety of literacy programmes are available, the existence of a serious drop-out problem is evident, among other challenges.

In order to address this, good practices on literacy policies and education programmes for youth and adults have been implemented. However, critical problems and challenges remain, relating to many factors.

With these realities and needs in mind, participants at this meeting of experts are invited to collectively reflect on the progress and challenges that adult literacy and education face in the region.
