Sustaining our planet

Reconcile conservation and development for present and future generations

Today, one of our greatest challenges is to sustain the planet that sustains us. Biodiversity loss and global environmental change, including climate change, are the defining issues of our time, with direct and complex economic and social impacts requiring a multinational collaborative response.

By coordinating global observation, monitoring and assessment efforts, UNESCO promotes evidence-based policy-making, using science to manage the environment in a sustainable way including the ocean, freshwater, and the Earth’s natural resources, ecosystems and biodiversity.

Concerned with problems at the interface of scientific, environmental, societal and development issues, UNESCO combines natural and social sciences, economics and education to improve human livelihoods and safeguard natural ecosystems, thus promoting innovative approaches to economic development.

To build a sustainable future, UNESCO also focuses on protecting communities through natural disaster reduction, learning from indigenous knowledge systems, and by promoting science literacy and education for sustainable development.
