Primer Foro Cultural sobre Irak (26-27 de mayo de 2004)

En todas las guerras, al desconcierto, la muerte y las mutilaciones que se producen en la población, vienen a añadirse las destrucciones injustificadas del alma que desfiguran la memoria de lo que constituye la identidad de un pueblo, es decir, su cultura. En Irak, tras trece años de sanciones y el caos consecutivo al reciente conflicto armado, son ocho mil años de historia de la humanidad que están actualmente en la balanza. Incendios provocados han dejado calcinados archivos y bibliotecas, los saqueadores han pillado edificios históricos e instituciones culturales, y han desaparecido de los museos y los sitios arqueológicos objetos de un valor único.

La respuesta de la UNESCO a esos acontecimientos fue inmediata. La primera tarea consistía en establecer la amplitud de los daños. Para ello, se celebraron tres reuniones internacionales en las que participaron expertos internacionales en el patrimonio cultural de Irak el 17 de abril de 2003 en Paris, el 29 de abril de2003 en Londres y el 1 de agosto de 2003 en Tokio. Se han formulado proyectos basándose en las recomendaciones de esas reuniones. Actualmente, cuatro de esos proyectos ya están en curso de ejecución y se han entablado contactos con donantes potenciales para los otros proyectos.
