UNESCO celebrates the International Youth Day on 12 August
This year’s International Youth Day is celebrated under the theme “Youth Civic Engagement” and includes information campaigns, thematic discussions and festivals in many countries across the globe. Its main objective is to boost the engagement and participation of youth in all spheres of human life: politics, economy, culture and social affairs.
The 12th of August was first designated as International Youth Day by the UN General Assembly in 1999, and serves as an annual celebration of the role of young women and men as drivers of change, and an opportunity to raise awareness of challenges and problems facing the world’s youth.
In 2015, this International Day’s theme of Youth Civic Engagement emphasizes the creative force and the innovative impetus that young people bring to every society, contributing to collective well-being and sustainable development.
On this occasion Director-General of UNESCO, Ms Irina Bokova delivered a message in which she called for young people from all over the world to attend the 9th UNESCO Youth Forum “Young Global Citizens for a Sustainable Planet”, which will take place on 26-28 October 2015, and “make their voices heard, to shape the action of world leaders”.
