Peng Liyuan, UNESCO Special Envoy for the Advancement of Girls’ and Women’s Education

DR - Ms Peng Liyuan, UNESCO Special Envoy for the Advancement of Girls’ and Women’s Education

Born in Shandong Province in 1962, Ms Peng Liyuan is a famous soprano singer, a professor of music and an opera performing artist. She is the first person in China to obtain a Master's degree in national vocal music.

Ms Peng Liyuan was a member of the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th National Committees of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and Vice Chairperson of the 10th National Committee of the All-China Youth Federation. She is currently Vice Chairperson of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Vice Chairperson of the Chinese Musicians’ Association, and Professor and Ph.D. supervisor at the China Conservatory.

Actively involved in public undertakings, she is serving now as the Voluntary Advocate for AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB) control and prevention for the Chinese National Health and Family Planning Commission, and is also the World Health Organization’s Goodwill Ambassador for TB and HIV.

On 27 March 2014, Ms Peng Liyuan was designated as a UNESCO Special Envoy for the Advancement of Girls’ and Women’s Education in recognition “of her commitment to empowering girls and women through quality education, her outstanding contribution to fighting inequalities in education, her devoted service to human development and creativity, and her dedication to the ideals and aims of the Organization.”
