		The Foundation was chosen by ACCU in 1995 as the Philippine Literacy Resource Centre NGO Partner. NDFCAI-WED was organised in 1984, and since its inception it has undertaken many and diversified education and human resource development projects and activities in pursuance of the global mandate on EFA. It has chosen the entire Mindanao region, particularly the regions of Region 12 and the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (ARRM), as its priority development areas in the Philippines due to its low standard of living, high incidence of illiteracy and poverty, causing high rates of infant and maternal mortality rates amongst the population that often live in isolated and remote rural areas of the region. Compared to other regions of the country, these areas and its potentials for growth and development are often further hampered due to intermittent internal armed conflict. NDFCAI-WED has been widely known as a distinguished NGO for its dedicated work and successful activities in the promotion of development initiatives focusing on literacy, alternative learning system for adults, out of school children and youth integrating within its educational packages of intervention enterprise development, health and food security. The Philippines LRC, established under NDFCAI-WED, has implemented various activities to assist the marginalized Muslims, Christians, and Lumads (Indigenous People) in close collaboration with the National Government, local and international organisations and local NGOs. It has been undertaking Alternative Learning System or Non-Formal Education projects serving and catering to strategically deprived areas and focused for the empowerment of women and girls through education, while at the same time affirming the nation's commitment to the vision of EFA and other international educational commitments of the country. It has been known to introduce a number of project innovations in the delivery of education initiatives that are culture and gender sensitive promoting respect for one’s religious beliefs, traditions and culture designed for the promotion of inter-cultural understanding and PEACE. It is internationally and locally multi-awarded, the recipient of the most prestigious UNESCO King Sejong International Literacy Award in 1997.
