Preparing a new generation of media trainers in Central Asia
03-08-2007 (Almaty)
The Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) and UNESCO recently implemented a training of trainers workshop. It provided professional broadcasters and personnel from media NGOs in Central Asia with the knowledge that they need to carry out effective training in their organizations.
Nine media professionals from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan attended the one-week workshop, which took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Practically all of them had experience in working as journalists/producers or as media NGO staff, and had a high degree of awareness of training needs and methodologies.
The curriculum focused on training methodology, management and organizational communication. It was implemented through Russian interpretation. Experimental techniques were employed to promote collaborative learning through team based projects. The learning process was enhanced by the diversity of the group in terms of their professional experiences in media. As outcomes, the participants presented structured and viable training projects that can be implemented in their countries.
In order to effectively respond to rapid changes and growing competition in today’s media landscape, it was recommended to organize similar trainings together with higher educational institutions, such as universities or broadcasting training departments. It will help prepare a compendium of creative and innovative trainers in Central Asia, who will be able to effectively respond to the needs of human resource development in their organizations.
