Mathematics of Planet Earth Day logo

The Mathematics of Planet Earth Day (MPE 2013) will take place at UNESCO Headquarters, in Paris on 5 March 2013. It will launch the International Mathematics of Planet Earth Exhibition, as well as the European Launch of the MPE 2013; and will include a panel discussion “What can mathematics do for the planet?”, a conference on African MPE-related topics as well as social programmes.

This day of celebration will be completed by a public conference of Prof Hervé Le Treut, starting at 6:30 pm at Jussieu University (Paris). The two main mathematics-related themes of this opening ceremony will cover Tsunamis and African concerns, in compliance with UNESCO Global Priority Africa.

Beyond the UNESCO Mathematics of Planet Earth Day on 5 March 2013, the MPE Exhibition will be displayed until 8 March 2013 at UNESCO Miollis Premises.
The International Basic Sciences Programme (IBSP) of UNESCO and the International Mathematical Union (IMU) are leading this Mathematics of Planet Earth Day and the international exhibition which is an important component of the year of scientific and outreach activities, Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013 (MPE2013), under the patronage of UNESCO.

More than 120 mathematical organizations worldwide are partners of MPE 2013 and will provide for the public and the schools an exciting opportunity to discover and experience many aspects of mathematics, including its applications on life and earth sciences, its relevance on societal and environmental issues, the impact of mathematics research on thematic topics specific to Africa, women involvement in mathematics, as well as the global trends and perspectives on mathematics for sustainable development.
