UNESCO Chair in Problem-Based Learning in Engineering Education

Aalborg University - Aalborg, Denmark

The UNESCO Chair in Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in engineering education was created in 2007 to enhance the social and cultural connections to science and engineering education. Through this interdisciplinary approach to learning, the Chair maintains it is necessary to develop a more globalised perspective in engineering education. In doing so, this will give engineers the skills needed to find solutions to contemporary problems. In line with the UNESCO Engineering Initiative’s mandates, the UNESCO Chair in PBL is addressing gender equality in engineering and engineering education curriculum development through its seminars, pedagogical activities and workshops.

UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Engineering in Developing Communities

The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology - Haifa, Israel

The UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Engineering in Developing Communities was created to support engineering education and sustainable engineering in developing countries through partnerships. The Chair is actively working towards the development of undergraduate and postgraduate engineering programmes in developing countries and improving the training of visiting academic staff. Recently, the Chair implemented an engineering education course in Nepal, a joint initiative involving the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, the University of Colorado and Kathmandu University. Students from more than 20 nationalities participated in monitoring, implementing and evaluating field segments.
