Latin America and the Caribbean to analyze the educational challenges beyond 2015

Less than three years from the deadline to meet the six 2015 Education for All goals, and with the need to generate a post 2015 educational agenda, Education ministers and senior representatives from the education sector in Latin America and the Caribbean are to meet in Mexico City on 29 and 30 January.

The 3rd Regional Education Project for Latin America and the Caribbean Extended Group Meeting is one of the several consultation processes to agree the priorities for a post-2015 development agenda which the UN and UNESCO are currently undertaking. The results of the January meeting in Mexico will be an important input of this emerging agenda, in which education has a mayor role.

The meeting’s goal is to present advances made in the region in the framework of Education for All (EFA), identifying key issues, existing gaps and divides, and current and emerging challenges with an eye towards events after 2015. “We believe that there is an imperative to address inequity seriously, as the greatest task pending in our region. This will be a strategic opportunity to design a new education roadmap through to 2015 and beyond, to make further advances in guaranteeing the right to education”, said Jorge Sequeira, Director of UNESCO’s Regional Bureau of Education for Latin America and the Caribbean (OREALC/UNESCO Santiago).

The education ministers and representatives present will discuss and validate this new roadmap, which will guide efforts made by countries, UNESCO and the UN on education during coming years, and which will also provide critical input for global discussions working towards defining a new development agenda for the post-2015 period.
