The Bibliothèque Polonaise de Paris (Polish Library), founded in Paris in the 1830s by Polish political emigrants are an example of how to regain independence lost and preserve collective memory. It is an example of solidarity and collaboration among international intellectual elites. The Library has no equal in the world as there is no other example anywhere of a nineteenth and twentieth century collection that had great influence on the preservation of national identity of Poles and the restoration of independence of Poland after the Treaty of Versailles, after 123 years of partitions. The collections of the Library, often rare, have been held in the same location for over 150 years and continue to be managed by the circles of former political emigration.
