#Unite4Heritage at the 38th UNESCO General Conference

The UNESCO-powered #Unite4Heritage anti-extremism and awareness-raising campaign will be present right throughout the General Conference, to provide you with all the information and inspiration you may need to participate in the campaign.

Launched in March by the Director-General of UNESCO in Baghdad, the #Unite4Heritage campaign aims to build an alternative to violent extremist narratives, based upon the ideals of cultural diversity, tolerance and understanding. Thousands of people around the world have participated in the campaign on social media and in the field, with campaign communications reaching millions of people every month.

If you're here at the General Conference, you will have undoubtedly noticed the large visuals between the elevators and on the doors around the building. The images explore the link between young people and the shared cultural heritage of humanity. Mixed in with the examples of heritage from around the world are images from countries such as Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan, including Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra, and the famed Assyrian ‘winged bull’.  As you pass through the images, take a moment to reflect upon the need to ensure this link between heritage and identity is strengthened and celebrated.

Activities will culminate on Thursday, 12 November with the #Unite4Heritage General Conference Side-Event in Room II, featuring a panel discussion involving 'heritage champions' at the forefront of safeguarding cultural heritage in times of conflict, along with a presentation of the campaign past and present and the actions UNESCO is taking in the field. The Director-General will also make a speech, calling for all governments and organisations to become involved in the campaign.

Be sure to visit our special #Unite4Heritage General Conference information stand, located right inside the Fontenoy entrance next to the elevators. Feel free to stop by at a moment that suits you to discuss the campaign and how you can participate.
