World Heritage
On 8 December 2011 Palestine ratified theConvention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage(1972).
On 29 June 2012 the Church of the Nativity and the Pilgrimage Route in Bethlehem was inscribed on the World Heritage List as the first Palestinian cultural site.
The UNESCO Ramallah Office provided the PA with technical assistance and financial support for the preparation of the Inventory of cultural and natural heritage sites of potential outstanding universal value in Palestine(2005), translated into the official Palestine World Heritage Tentative Listin 2012, as well as the nomination document for the Church of the Nativity.
Monitoring missions have been undertaken for assessing the state of conservation of Palestinian Cultural Heritage sites, as recommended by World Heritage Committee Decisions 26COM 6.1 and 6.2 “Protection of the Cultural Heritage in the Palestinian Territories” and 27COM 5.2 “Implementation of the Decisions concerning the protection of the cultural heritage of the Palestinian Territories”.
