"Sciences et Technologie" et "60 minutes pour convaincre"

[Disponible en anglais uniquement]

In September 2005, UNESCO's Bureau of Pubic Information launched a series of 60 week-long events organized as part of the events to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Organization and designed to focus attention on a range of the Organization’s activities. Each week, an hour-long seminar entitled '60 Minutes to Convince', held at lunchtime on successive Tuesdays, evoked, week by week, 60 subjects at the heart of its action.

Among the weekly seminars, a fair number related to 'Science and Technology' – some directly, others more tangentially -- including:

  • Natural disaster reduction (10-15 October 2005)
  • Promoting the advancement of scientific knowledge (31 October- 5 November)
  • Observation and knowledge of oceans (19-24 December)
  • Science and technology for development (23-28 January 2006)
  • Man and the Biosphere (13-18 February)
  • World Heritage (13-18 March)
  • Water management (20-25 March)
  • Small islands and coastal zones (10-15 April)
  • Education for sustainable development (5-10 June)
  • Desertification and arid zones (12-17 June)
  • Ethics of science (10-15 July)
  • Traditional knowledge (7-12 August)
  • Bioethics (4-9 September)
  • Science policies (18-23 September)
  • Science education (9-14 October).

The initial series of sixty 60-minute seminars has been followed by other '60 Minutes' meetings starting in November 2006 organized by UNESCO's Bureau of Public information. Again, several of these meetings relate to 'Science and Technology' concerns:

  • UNESCO and climate (16 January 2007)
  • Women and Science (20 February)
  • Water scarcity (20 March)
  • Sustainability at UNESCO (24 April)
  • Biosphere reserves (10 July)
  • 'Greening of UNESCO' (13 November)
