Celebration of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore

The memory of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore will be celebrated from May 7 by a range of events like cultural programmes, conferences and exhibitions to be held this year in several countries in Europe, America and Asia.

These events would provide an overview of activities to explore the life and work of this multi-talented humanist who was a poet, a playwriter, a painter, a musician, a composer and an educator. As a promoter of intercultural dialogue, Tagore encouraged mutual understanding and cultural rapprochement between peoples, drawn on the resources of mind and the necessity to build bridges between different cultures.

To mark the 150th birth anniversary of the poet, the Indian government is instituting an international award in the memory of Tagore to those promoting values of universal brotherhood.  

This anniversary also represents an opportunity for UNESCO to make a strong statement about its commitment to renewing with the sources of humanism and to re-exploring the strength of an age-old message towards of the challenges of the modern world.
