Establishment of a National Living Human Treasures system in Fiji

The Fiji Arts Council has launched, in collaboration with UNESCO, a project to establish a national Living Human Treasures system. The aim of this project is to provide support to bearers of traditional knowledge and skills in danger of disappearing, and to ensure their effective transmission to young people.
 
In the framework of the project, a National Working Group will develop detailed procedures for the identification of target domains (?) of intangible cultural heritage, the definition of the Living Human Treasures, and criteria for their selection.  A Commission of Experts will also be created.  Its task will be to examine the information collected on masters through field research in 14 provinces, and then to provide recommendations to the Minister for Fijian Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Regional Development. 

Selected Living Human Treasures will participate in a series of seminars, transmitting through teaching their knowledge and skills in schools and communities.  Exhibitions highlighting their practices and skills will be organized in order to raise the awareness of young people on the richness and importance of the Fijian intangible heritage.
