On entend par patrimoine culturel subaquatique toutes les traces d'existence humaine reposant ou ayant reposé sous l'eau et présentant un caractère culturel ou historique. Reconnaissant le besoin urgent de préserver et de protéger un tel héritage, l'UNESCO a élaboré en 2001 la Convention sur la protection du patrimoine culturel subaquatique.
