UNESCO proposes new guidelines for protecting and promoting museums

More than 160 experts, from 70 Member States and 20 observer organizations, participating in a two-day Intergovernmental Meeting of Experts (Category II), pursuant to 37 C/Resolution 43 and 195 EX/ Decision 35, approved, on 28 May 2015, the draft text of the Recommendation on the Protection and Promotion of Museums and Collections, their Diversity and their Role in Society, for its submission to the 38th session of the UNESCO General Conference.
This marked another decisive step towards the establishment of a new international standard-setting instrument on museums, taking into account the many changes that have occurred in the field of museums since the only existing UNESCO instrument on the subject was adopted in 1960.
The new Recommendation, if adopted by the General Conference later this year, will become a cornerstone of public and international museum policies for decades to come. Its main focus is on enhancing existing practices for maintaining the integrity of collections, and on providing guidance for the functions of museums while adapting their objectives to address pressing contemporary challenges.
The Intergovernmental Meeting also considered ways and means to establish a High Level Forum on Museums foreseen in the UNESCO approved Programme and Budget (37C/5).
The People’s Republic of China announced funding for the establishment of such a Forum.
