International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda
On the occasion of April 7, proclaimed by the United Nations as International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda, UNESCO will host a series of activities organized by the Embassy of Rwanda in France and the Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, in partnership with the Organization, mainly with the Africa Department and the Education Sector.
The inauguration of the exhibitions "Voices of Rwanda" by Taylor Krauss and "Men Standing" by Bruce Clarke will be held at 18h in room Pas perdus. It will be followed by a memorial ceremony in Room I, which will be opened by Mrs. Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, Mr. Jacques Kabale, Ambassador of Rwanda to France and Permanent Delegate, and others personalities.
The ceremony will include the intervention of the President of Ibuka France, an association that works to keep alive the memory of the genocide of Tutsis in Rwanda and to bring to justice those responsible for crimes of genocide and to support the survivors of the 1994 massacre. It will also be marked by the projection of the official film of the 20th commemoration Kwibuka 20 "Remember, Unite, Renew", musical performances and will conclude with the testimony of Mr. Alain Ngirinshuti, survivor of the genocide, jurist and Vice-President of Ibuka-France.
The decision of the General Assembly of United Nations to declare 7 April 2004 as the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda stems from a recommendation made by the Executive Council of the African Union. In March 2003, the Council recommended that the United Nations and the international community proclaim, in commemoration of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, an international day of reflection and recommitment to the fight against genocide throughout the world.
The "Kwibuka 20" campaign, which means in Kinyarwanda "remember", was launched January 7, 2014 in Kigali (Rwanda) and will be marked by a series of events around the world for the 20th Anniversary of the genocide. The flame of remembrance lit on January 7, runs through Rwanda and the places of genocide until April 7.
