Priority Gender Equality and the 38th session of the General Conference

During the 38th session of the General Conference (3-18 November 2015) Priority Gender Equality, one of two global priorities of the Organization, was high on the agenda of a majority of UNESCO’s Member States.

Representatives of several  Member States strongly supported UNESCO’s work on preventing gender-based violence, and expressed their commitment to  the roadmap for UNESCO’s action on preventing and addressing school related gender-based violence adopted by the 197th session of the Executive Board. Non-traditional forms of violence were also addressed, including those based on gender identities and sexual orientation.

Member States addressed the unequal participation of women and men in all walks of life and urged UNESCO to address the fundamental cultural beliefs and practices as well as systemic factors through action in all its domains. The gender dimensions of armed conflict, post-conflict and post-disaster situations and the related refugee crisis were also emphasized.

The need for gender sensitive budgeting was discussed in the APX Commisison, and many Member States suggested that UNESCO should develop a cross-sectoral approach to allocate sufficient funds to recognize and support SDG-5, i.e., gender equality.
