Launch of a Higher Education Initiative for Sustainable Development

@UNESCO
United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development

During this Rio+20 side event, leaders of the international academic community will come together to announce a new Higher Education Initiative for Sustainable Development. The initiative will be facilitated by an umbrella of United Nations partner organizations.

The event will be organized by UN DESA on behalf of UN Academic Impact, UNEP, UNESCO, UN Global Compact, UN PRME, UN University.
Since higher education institutions educate and train decision makers, they play a key role in building more sustainable societies and creating new paradigms.

The initiative calls upon leaders of the academic community around the globe to commit themselves to fostering research and teaching on sustainable development issues, greening their campuses and engaging with international frameworks such as the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development for which UNESCO is the lead agency.
