Conference on Legal Information Opens Today in Minsk

A two-day International Scientific and Practical Conference on “Information Technologies and Law (Legal Informatization – 2004)” looking at access to legal information opens today in Minsk, the capital of the Republic of Belarus, under the auspices and with the financial support of UNESCO.
The conference is organized by the National Center of Legal Information of Belarus, a governmental institution in charge of facilitating legal information exchange, including the registration of legal acts, the maintenance of a databank of legal information and the dissemination of legal information.
The event was included in the list of thematic meetings organized in the framework of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). Its final documents will be a contribution of Belarus to the preparation of the second phase of the WSIS, which is to be held in Tunis in 2005.
Participants in the Conference, which will be presented with the activities of the National Center of Legal Information and its system of legal information, will discuss the use of ICT in the area of legal information, methodological and technological aspects of the development of legal information systems and capacity building.
UNESCO's “Recommendation concerning the Promotion and Use of Multilingualism and Universal Access to Cyberspace” and the recently published “Policy Guidelines for the Development and Promotion of Governmental Public Domain Information” are providing a frame for the discussions.
