From 15 to 16 April 2015, the traditional meeting of the National Commissions for UNESCO took place in the margins of the 196th session of the Executive Board at UNESCO Headquarters. Over 100 participants, representing 90 National Commissions/Permanent Delegations, attended the morning meetings.

On that occasion, the second edition of the annual report of the National Commissions (2014) both in English and French was presented.  This year, 137 National Commissions took part in the exercise. This new information tool on best practices and experiences of National Commissions, is also available online at www.unesco.int

Main topics discussed during the meeting were “the main findings of the 2015 EFA Global Monitoring Report (GMR)”, presented by Mr Aaron Benavot, Director of the EFA Global Monitoring Report Team (ED/GMR), and “the Natural Sciences Sector with a particular focus on climate change, COP 21 and the post-2015 development agenda” presented by Ms Flavia Schlegel, Assistant Director-General for the Natural Sciences (ADG/SC).  These presentations were followed by fruitful exchange of information and sharing of views among the participants.

During the meeting, the launch of the Young Professionals Programme was announced and the National Commissions were encouraged to support and make use of this programme.  The upcoming International Jazz Day on 30 April was another important topic of information. The National Commissions were encouraged to organize events for Jazz Day.

On 15 April, the United Kingdom’s National Commission organized a seminar dedicated to exchanging ideas on methodologies to measure the national value of UNESCO, which was attended by numerous participants.
