From 8 to 10 July, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, will take part in the 2015 High-Level Segment of the Economic and Social Council, at UN Headquarters in New York, which is dedicated to the theme “Strengthening integration, implementation and review – the High-level Political Forum after 2015” and “Managing the transition from the Millennium Development Goals to the Sustainable Development Goals: what it will take”.

A few months before the UN system is expected to adopt a milestone development agenda for post-2015, the High-Level Segment represents an important opportunity to take stock and discuss vital issues for the way forward.

In the context of the ECOSOC’s High-Level Segment, the Director-General will chair a Ministerial Roundtable highlighting “The Critical Role of STI and the Science-Policy-Society Interface for the Successful Transition from MDGs to SDGs”, organized by UNESCO. Participants will include members of Secretary General’s Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). The Roundtable will provide a platform for governments, UN agencies, civil society, academia and SAB members to discuss and harness the role of science, technology and innovation and the science-policy-society interface as key catalysts for sustainable development.

The Director-General will also co-host a Ministerial Roundtable on “Culture: The Key to a Successful Transition Towards the Sustainable Development Goals”, co-organized by the Permanent Mission of Peru to the UN, UNESCO, UNDP and UNFPA. The Roundtable will convene representatives of Governments and Permanent Missions to the UN, representatives of UN Organizations and civil society organizations.

While in New York, the Director-General is expected to hold several bilateral meetings.
