Incheon: Republic of Korea and UNESCO to Harness ICTs for Education
The Republic of Korea and UNESCO are joining forces to support educational development in sub-Saharan Africa through the use of ICT, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Mr Hwang Woo Yea, and Director-General Irina Bokova, on 21 May 2015.
The “UNESCO-Republic of Korea Joint Initiative on ICT Transforming Education in Africa,” amounting to USD 6 million, was signed in the margins of the World Education Forum in Incheon, and represents a new chapter in the Republic of Korea’s longstanding cooperation in education, in particular through the Better Education for Africa’s Rise project and support for global citizenship education.
The agreement will focus on expanding access and improving quality through blended learning, strengthening higher education systems through the use of open and distance learning, and facilitating policy development and knowledge sharing.
The Deputy Prime Minister expressed his country’s strong wish to increase cooperation with African countries in education, noting special demand for better teacher training.
The Director-General reiterated her gratitude to the Government of the Republic of Korea for hosting the World Education Forum and highlighted the significance of the Joint Initiative to advance the Education 2030 vision through the innovative harnessing of new technologies.
The World Education Forum in Incheon, which was attended by over 130 education ministers, concluded on 21 May with the adoption of a Declaration that sets out a transformative vision for education in next 15 years.
