As part of the events organised by UNESCO on the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, Irina Bokova visited the Shoah Memorial, with Mr Janos Lazar, Minister of State, heading the Prime Minister’s office of Hungary and President of the International Commission of the Hungarian Holocaust Memorial Year 2014.

With Mr Meir Lau, President of Yad Vashem, Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv and Mr. Samuel Pisar, UNESCO Honorary Ambassador and Special Envoy for Holocaust Education, Irina Bokova was received by the President of the Shoah Memorial, Mr Eric de Rotschild. Addressing students, she underlined on the absolute necessity of Holocaust education for the transmission of this history to future generations.

“You are tomorrow’s actors and you can prevent it from happening again”, she said.

Director-General highlighted all of UNESCO’s work, launched under her leadership, to fight against anti-Semitism and genocide denial as well as UNESCO’s action to integrate Holocaust education in the curricula of schools across the world.

During the official ceremony of the International Day, Director-General underlined once again the central role played by Holocaust education in the fight against all forms of racism and anti-Semitism, yesterday and today, as a foundation for building more lasting peace.

“Remembrance is essential to honour those who were killed. Remembering is essential also to protect the living, to fight against racism, anti-Semitism and denial, today and now,” she declared.
