Reforming UNESCO
In 2009, I was elected on the promise to build a more coherent, efficient and visible UNESCO in order to address the imperatives of the new, emerging world.
UNESCO has transformed radically and will continue to do so – strengthening our delivery and streamlining structures and processes for this.
Together with Member States, we have brought UNESCO deeper into the UN System, focusing on its core assets, building a leaner and more effective secretariat. We have led a major field network reform, bringing UNESCO closer to the Field. We have strengthened our work with partners, building on the recommendation of an independent external evaluation. All of this has helped move UNESCO forward in spite of extremely difficult times.
I am determined to accelerate reform, focusing on areas where our impact is greatest and most in demand, to contribute to more effective multilateralism.
