Meeting of the Director-General with His Excellency Paul Biya, President of Cameroon

On 1 February, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, met the President of the Republic of Cameroon, HE Paul Biya. The President renewed his appreciation for the work of the Director-General in leading the Organization. He also confirmed his country’s readiness to work more closely with UNESCO, notably in providing further support for priority projects.
The President expressed his satisfaction with the choice of Yaoundé to host the Regional Office for Central Africa and highlighted his country’s willingness to give all the necessary support to that Office.
The Director-General reiterated her gratitude to President Biya for Cameroon's contribution to UNESCO’s multi-donor emergency fund and for his readiness to look for ways and means to continue this support. She reaffirmed the priority given to Africa by UNESCO, which is reflected through concrete activities on the ground, intended to accompany the efforts of governments in the Organization’s areas of competence. The Director-General also informed the President that she currently chairs the Committee of Cosponsoring Organizations (CCO) for UNAIDS.
Irina Bokova expressed her high appreciation for the support and backing that the Regional Bureau in Yaoundé enjoys.
Both the President and the Director-General welcomed the excellent state of cooperation between Cameroon and UNESCO.
They also discussed the role of Goodwill Ambassadors, whose next meeting will be held in June, in supporting the work of the Organization, as well as the action taken by the First Lady in raising HIV/AIDS awareness and preventive education in this field.
President Paul Biya invited the Director-General to make an official visit to Cameroon.
