Meeting the sexual and reproductive health needs of young people, a landmark resolution by the UN

UNESCO/R.Manowalailao

“We cannot ignore the facts. Many young people are sexually active, and because of this, they may face risks to their health, including sexual violence.” (UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon).

A landmark resolution has recognized the right of young people to decide on all matters linked to their sexuality and to control their sexuality free from violence, discrimination and coercion.

On 27 April 2012, the United Nations Commission on Population and Development adopted a resolution in support of adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health and human rights.  The resolution, inter alia, urges governments to provide comprehensive education to young people on human sexuality, sexual and reproductive health, human rights and gender equality, and to provide access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services, including safe abortion where legal.
