Symposium explores links between HIV & AIDS education, school health and nutrition

On the eve of World AIDS Day, an international symposium exploring the possibility of strengthening connections between HIV & AIDS education, and school health and nutrition efforts, is being convened in Washington, D.C. on 30 November 2011.
The UNAIDS Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on Education, in which UNESCO plays a leading role, is based on a commitment to do ‘more and better with less’. This symposium is to review, identify and articulate practices, evidence, opportunities and challenges for HIV and AIDS linkages with school health initiatives. Participants will examine strategies for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of education sector responses to HIV and AIDS through synergies with school health and nutrition programming.
Such symposia are held semi-annually in conjunction with the IATT meeting, where UN agencies and international NGOs come together to harmonize and improve the education sector response to HIV and AIDS around the world. Past symposium topics include education sector workplace policies and the cost-effectiveness of comprehensive sexuality education.
The symposium in Washington, DC, is being hosted jointly by Save the Children, American Institutes for Research, FHI360 and the Global Partnership for Education.
