As the Computer Centre at Technological University of Tajikistan, established through a UNESCO/UNDP project in order to foster human resource development in the use of ICTs, celebrated its third anniversary last week, UNESCO’s Director General Koïchiro Matsuura has been awarded with the title "Honorary Professor" during a visit to the University on 1 November 2002.
The celebration marks the successful implementation of the project entitled “Establishment of Technological University of Tajikistan Computer Centre for Training and Informatics Skill Development" (TAJ/98/015). The project with a total budget of $250,000 ($200,000 from UNDP and $50,000 from UNESCO), which was signed by UNDP, UNESCO and the Government in November 1998, mainly concentrates on human resource development, infrastructure building and national IT development

According to the Government of Tajikistan and the Technological University of Tajikistan, UNESCO’s assistance in planning and implementing the project to build the country’s first IT centre was highly appreciated. “Thanks to UNESCO’s excellent role in implementing the project, the very young Technological University of Tajikistan has become a model IT pivot in the nation, guiding our young generations to access to knowledge which is critical and indispensable for the new information revolution era that will dominate the 21st century” said Nigina Sharopova, Tajikistan Deputy Prime Minister.

The centre’s development is based on five main principles:

  • Setting up a solid software developing team capable to produce endogenous software products and compete in international software markets;

  • Training of a number of certified MS/Novell/Cisco engineers to provide MS/Novell/Cisco licensed training courses at the center to meet customer-ordered needs of public and private sectors and to generate resource recovery funds;

  • Working towards achieving the “Cooperative Added Value Solution to the Internet Connectivity” for sustainable access to the Internet, developed by UNESCO;

  • Creating a solid databases on the center’s server to provide hands-on services to the local communities and to generate revenue as resource recovery measure,

  • Creating new services such as website design, database development and info-learning sub-center for children as additional resource recovery activities.
