Event on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination: The Role of Education 2013

The event International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination: The Role of Education took place at the headquarters of the Ministry of Education, in Brasilia, on 21 March, 2013. The initiative was a partnership between the Ministry of Education and UNESCO Brasilia Office.

This celebration was part of the Brazil-Africa: Crossed Histories Project, in response to the Law No. 10.639 of 2003 that directs that school systems should include the history of African-Brazilian and African cultures in basic education.

Two pedagogical materials in Portuguese were launched:  “Síntese da coleção história geral da África” (Summary of the UNESCO General History of Africa Collection) and the book “História e cultura africana e afro-brasileira na educação infantil” (African and African-Brazilian Histories and Cultures for Early Childhood Education). In addition, an award on African short stories, entitled in Portuguese "Prêmio Curta Histórias", was also launched.
