International Conference on "Teachers for EFA in Africa

Advocacy is an essential element of UNESCO’s mandate and action as the EFA global coordinating agency. Increased advocacy efforts help to accelerate progress towards the achievement of the six EFA goals by holding the international community to its commitments and by sustaining political momentum.

UNESCO uses different advocacy opportunities to promote the right to education of all children, youth and adults and to place education at the top of the political agenda. These include:

  • participation and representation in EFA-related international forums and bodies
  • permanent dialogue with EFA partners, including governments, multilateral and intergovernmental agencies, civil society, parliamentarians and the private sector
  • involvement in awareness-raising campaigns, such as the annual EFA Global Action Week and other international days (e.g. World Teachers’ Day, International Literacy Day)
  • preparation and dissemination of communication materials, including exhibitions, videos, interviews and newsletters
  • mobilization of prominent advocates for education, such as the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors
  • dissemination of evidence, research and publications through various networks
  • utilization of media events to spread messages to a wider public audience, especially through press releases
