Thematic Partnership

Thematic partnerships were developed following the 2000 World Education Forum to facilitate collaborative action to tackle specific issues which are common to many countries in their efforts to reach the EFA goals by 2015.

Major thematic partnerships include:

UN Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI)
Launched in 2000 at the World Education Forum, UNGEI is coordinated by UNICEF and aims to narrow the gender gap so that girls everywhere enjoy an equal chance to obtain schooling and equal opportunities to succeed.

HIV & AIDS and Education
There are two main international frameworks for partnership which address HIV & AIDS and Education. The first, the UNAIDS Inter-agency Task Team on Education, is convened by UNESCO and provides a platform for advocacy, networking and harmonisation among international partners, raising the profile of both the impact of HIV & AIDS on education and the role of education in HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.

The second, EDUCAIDS, is a multi-country UNAIDS initiative led by UNESCO to support the implementation of comprehensive national educational responses to the HIV and AIDS epidemic. In this initiative, UNESCO collaborates with a number of key stakeholders.

Global Task Force on Child Labour and EFA
The Global Task Force on Child Labour and EFA is an international partnership based on the premise that EFA cannot be achieved without eliminating child labour. It promotes collaboration between UNESCO, the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the World Bank and the Global March against Child Labour. Several donor and developing countries are also represented on this task force.

Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies
The Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE) is a global, open network of non-governmental organizations, UN agencies, donors, practitioners, researchers and individuals from affected populations working together within a humanitarian and development framework to ensure the right to education in emergencies and post-crisis reconstruction.

Consultative Group on Early Childhood Care and Development
The Consultative Group on Early Childhood Care and Development is an inter-agency consortium with strong links to regional networks and a track record of advocacy and knowledge generation and dissemination at an international level. The focus on young children, their families and communities remains highly relevant: large numbers of young children live in difficult and resource-poor contexts, with detrimental effects on their overall physical, social and cognitive development and well-being.

Initiative on School Fee Abolition
This international initiative aims to support countries in their efforts to abolish school fees in primary education. It brings together UNESCO, UNICEF, the World Bank and other partners.
