En los escasos años transcurridos desde que se publicó la primera edición se han producido cambios importantes en el campo de los archivos audiovisuales. La irrupción de la digitalización y el consiguiente cambio tecnológico han puesto en duda la continuidad de profesiones asentadas. La película de nitrato, que antes se consideraba inestable y desechable, empieza a durar más que las copias en acetato realizadas a partir de las de nitrato con fines de conservación. Los cursos oficiales de postgrado en archivos audiovisuales se van afianzando y normalizando en algunos países como requisito para quienes desean ejercer la profesión. Estas circunstancias y otras parecidas plantean cuestiones filosóficas que deben abordarse.
