Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia: Associations and Unions

The Association of Journalists of (the Former Yugoslav Republic of) Macedonia (AJM or ZNM) is the main professional association in the country. It was founded in 1946 with the main task of protecting and promoting freedoms, rights and responsibilities of the journalists. As reported by the Macedonian Institute for Media in a 2012 analysis, the Association claims to have around 1360 journalist members.

The Independent Union of Journalists and Media Workers (SSNM) was founded in November 2010 and it has members among regularly employed professional journalists as well as freelance workers. The SSNM is also a member of the International Federation of Journalists. The Union provides assistance to its members also through consultancies and legal help.

The Macedonian Institute of Media has been active since 2001 as a research and training center specialized in the media field. It provides training courses and monitors the media and their functioning. It also promotes media policies and is engaged in the promotion of freedom of speech and of expression in the country.
