UNESCO, Canal France International, the French Embassy in Tunis, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Mediapart launch today a series of investigative journalism training courses for Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia.

Four sessions of the four-day courses on investigative journalism start this week in Tunis. The objective of this series of trainings, which will end in March 2014, is to allow journalists from the Maghreb region to produce investigative reports on the issues of corruption, transparency and access to information.

As a result of the call for proposals made in October 2013, ten investigative projects submitted by print and online journalists from the Maghreb region were selected to participate in the training. The first training session starts today and will be held until 15 December in Tunis, at the African Centre for the Training of Journalists and Communicators. It is focusing on the role of journalists in the public debates, the specificities of investigative journalism, the protection of journalists as well as their rights and responsibilities as defined in the international texts and conventions.

The programme of the trainings will also explore the methodology and case studies on investigative journalism, based on the existing resources such as UNESCO’s Story-based inquiry: a manual for investigative journalists and The global investigative journalism casebook.

This training series has been made possible thanks to the support of the government of Finland.
