Turkey: Associations and Unions

The Journalists Association of Turkey (also called Turkish Journalists Association, Türkiye Gazeteciler Cemiyeti, shortened in TGC) is the main journalists’ association of the country, with around 4,500 members.  It was founded in 1946 and has been active since then. It has its own code of ethics.

The other Journalists associations are the Journalists’ Federation of Turkey (Türkiye Gazeteciler Federasyonu), the Progressive Journalists Association (Çağdaş Gazeteciler Derneği), the Foundation of Journalists and Writers (Gazetecilerve Yazarlar Vakfı), the Association of Economic Reporters  (Ekonomi Muhabirleri Derneği), the Association of Photo Reporters (Foto Muhabirleri Derneği) and the Association of Parliamentary Reporters (Parlamento Muhabirleri Derneği).

The Media Association (Medya Derneği), is a “non-profit organization that fosters, supports and directs elevation of the standards of the media for a more democratic society. It advocates freedom of expression, ethical values, diversity and honesty in the media. It believes in democracy as well as universal human rights and the rule of law”. The main objective of the association is to raise the quality of the media and journalists in Turkey to world standards by promoting education and press freedom. The Media Association’s board of directors is comprised of representatives from Turkish media groups, newspapers as well as radio and television stations. It carries out its activities with the support of various member media organizations.

The Independent Communication Network (Bağımsız İletişim Ağı- BİA) was established in 1997 to monitor media freedom in the country. This association also gives training courses for journalists, issues communications and publications. The BİA also has a Legal Support Unit that monitors and publishes national and local rights violations related to the press.

The trade unions active in the country include the Trade Union of Journalists in Turkey (Türkiye Gazeteciler Sendikası, TGS) and Media Union (MEDYA-SEN).
