Role of media in conflict

Media students from various Lebanese universities gathered for a 2-days workshop on the Role of Media in Conflict that took place at the American University for Science and Technology (AUST), Beirut on 12-13 November 2013.

This training came as a joint cooperation between The UNESCO regional office in Beirut and AUST in an effort to fill the gap between the university life and the workforce for young journalists, in particular, through the topic of conflict and how journalists should deal with it.

The training program aimed at raising the skills of young journalists on responsible and objective media coverage, in times of conflict. That included understanding and analysis of conflict; challenges faced by journalists covering conflict, and the role of the media in fueling or resolving conflicts. The training also examined case studies on monitoring hate speech and violence in the media, in addition to live media coverage. In order to link the training more to the daily life, media experts were invited to present their own experience from local TVs as well as from international organizations.

At the end of the workshop, participants were presented with certificates from both UNESCO and AUST. Finally, this training workshop received support from Sweden  as part of a project that promotes Freedom of Expression in the Arab states.
