Freedom of Expression on the Internet: UNESCO conference in Marrakech

UNESCO’s Office in Rabat, in partnership with the Internet Society - Morocco and the Moroccan Ministry of Communication, is organizing a two-day conference on Freedom of Expression on the Internet on 15 and 16 February 2013 in Marrakech, Morocco. The event is part of UNESCO’s global action to promote an enabling environment for freedom of expression in Arab countries, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.
Through the presentations of UNESCO’s publications, Freedom of connection, freedom of expression: the changing legal and regulatory ecology shaping the Internet, and Global Survey on Internet Privacy and Freedom, the Conference will explore the social and political dynamics that govern the conditions for freedom of expression on the Internet and will provide a perspective on how the legal and regulatory trends might be constraining freedom of expression online.
The conference will also explore recent developments in Morocco that have shaped freedom of expression on the Internet as well as the various legal and policy mechanisms behind and will identify challenges and opportunities for the creation of an environment conducive to the freedom of expression in Morocco.
UNESCO recognizes the enormous potential that the Internet opens up for expression, participation and development. The Organization also believes that freedom of expression is not just a by-product of technical change: it must be protected by legal and regulatory measures that balance a variety of potentially conflicting values and interests in a complex global ecology of choices.
