Published by the UNESCO Office in Havana, Cuba, in December 2013, this publication focuses on the issue of illicit trafficking of cultural property in the region of Latin America.

The value of cultural property, the importance of its protection, the prevention of its illegal trade, the role of the UNESCO Conventions, including the 1970 instrument in the development of individuals and societies, and the outcome of UNESCO regional workshops (in St. Lucia, Lima, Buenos Aires and Asunción) are part of the contents of this issue, which includes contributions from experts of the UNESCO Cultural Heritage Protection Treaties Section, and from some of their partners in the fight against illicit trafficking: UNIDROIT, INTERPOL and ICOM .

This edition also shares the experiences of the Andean Community, and highlights the mechanisms employed to curb and combat such trafficking in Argentina, Paraguay, Peru, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Jamaica, Haiti, St. Martin, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

Culture & Development is a magazine published since 2000 by the Regional Office for Culture of UNESCO for Latin America and the Caribbean in Havana, Cuba. It is a space for reflection, exchange and dissemination of ideas and experiences, and puts forward culture as an important channel for human and economic development in the region.
