Havana, March 2015

The UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean has published a new issue of its popular magazine ‘Culture & Development’. Culture plays a crucial role in the sustainable human and economic development of the region, and UNESCO will continue to strengthen this role in its post-2015 agenda.

In its current edition, the magazine places special emphasis on the importance of underwater cultural heritage. The entry into force of the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage represented a significant milestone in the safeguarding of this heritage, and to date the Convention has been ratified by 17 Latin American and Caribbean countries, while many others are in the process of ratification.

The new publication covers a wide selection of practical, technical and legal issues ranging from heritage management and international cooperation to site discovery, excavation and preservation. Discussing dozens of major cultural heritage sites in rivers, lakes and oceans across Latin America and the Caribbean, this special 100-page edition of Culture & Development magazine makes a landmark contribution to underwater cultural heritage research and management in the region.

Available in both English and Spanish, ‘Culture & Development: Underwater Cultural Heritage in Latin America and the Caribbean’ can be freely downloaded and/or accessed online through UNESCO’s new Resources and Downloads page, which contains a wide range of publications, image galleries, videos, reports and databases on underwater cultural heritage.
