Did You Know? A mysterious mechanism was discovered off Greece...
A wreck containing many pieces of sculpture and other artefacts was discovered by sponge divers near the Greek island Antikythera in 1900. The most celebrated find, dated to about 100 BC, was a mechanism now considered as the world’s oldest analogue computer. The mechanism is designed to calculate astronomical positions and might have been based on the work of Archimedes.
Many marble statutes as well as a bronze portrait head from a statue of a philosopher, probably Bion the Borysthenite (about 240 BC), were also found in the wreck.
