MOST Intergovernmental Council (IGC)

The MOST Intergovernmental Council is composed of 35 Member States of UNESCO, elected by UNESCO's General Conference.

The Council convenes every two years and establishes the priority areas to be researched, decides on overall policy and funding questions, and handles the relations with governmental authorities.

During the Sixth session of the IGC, held at UNESCO Headquarters (Paris) from 19 to 21 February 2003, it was recommended that:

  1. IGC be given a greater role in governance, approval of strategies and programmes and the facilitation of relations with national research centers and policy makers.
  2. The role of the IGC Bureau should be considerably strengthened and it should meet twice a year.

Member States of the IGC 2015-2017

Western Europe and North America: Canada, France, Greece, Israel, Norway, Turkey;

Central/Eastern Europe: Czech Republic, Hungary, Russian Federation, Slovakia;

Latin America and the Caribbean: Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico;

Asia and the Pacific: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand;

Africa: Cameroon, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo;

Arab States: Bahrein, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon.

Member States of the IGC 2013-2015

Western Europe and North America: Canada, Greece, Israel, Norway, Spain, Turkey;

Central/Eastern Europe: Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Slovakia;

Latin America and the Caribbean: Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico;

Asia and the Pacific: China, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand;

Africa: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, South Africa;

Arab States: Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates.
