The International Day of Persons with Disabilities, celebrated each year on the 3rd of December, seeks to raise awareness and mobilize support for the dignity and well-being of persons with disabilities. Today, around 15 per cent of the world’s population is estimated to be living with some form of disability. UNESCO recognizes that the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of social life remains an enormous challenge. This year, UNESCO will celebrate this Day to reaffirm that persons will disabilities should enjoy human rights and fundamental freedoms. Through an event on this occasion, UNESCO will present its actions in ensuring universal access to quality education and accessibility to information and knowledge. The event will also highlight the role of civil society in advancing the rights of people with disabilities. In addition, successful practices from the Province of Quebec, Canada in promoting inclusive education policies for students with disabilities will be showcased at the meeting. Last but not least, the event will advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities through art: a photo exhibition by blind photographers and short documentary films will be featured.
